The INTO and Turn to Teaching (TtT) collaborated to host a shared learning day on Working Towards a Diverse and Inclusive Teaching Profession. The event was held in Maynooth University on 31 May with over 100 education stakeholders and teachers from under-represented backgrounds in attendance. The event explored the opportunities of, and barriers to, a diverse profession. The keynote conversation titled ‘Diversifying Teaching in Ireland: Background and Context’ provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with fostering diversity in the profession. The topic was further explored through a panel discussion with teachers from under-represented backgrounds and experts in teacher diversity. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in roundtable discussions which focused on various aspects related to diversity and inclusivity in teaching. The INTO envisages that the event will be the start of a critical conversation around the diversification of the profession. Expressions of interest were invited through the INTO member ezine from teachers who identified as being from an under-represented groups. Provision for sub cover was made available to ensure that there was a teacher representative for each of the nine grounds, namely, gender, marital status, family status, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, religion, and membership of the Traveller community.
