Duration

Ongoing.

Partnership

It is a joint project between Lärarförbundet (Section for School Leaders), the Swedish Association of School Principals and Directors of Education and the students’ organizations called the Backa Initiative.

Reason it was developed

After the #metoo movement, education authorities, teachers’ unions and the students’/pupils’ organizations started some roundtable discussions that among other things ended up in a joint project between Lärarförbundet (Section for School Leaders), the Swedish Association of School Principals and Directors of Education and the students’ organizations called the Backa Initiative.

Activities

A nationwide training tour to work with schools to prevent hate speech, sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools, was developed and implemented. The autumn tour of 2018 was the starting point for the work of the Backa initiative and gave pupils and those who work in the school an important opportunity to both lift and discuss a burning issue.

Results

In total, Backadagen visited 208 schools in 30 locations around Sweden to give pupils and education personnel concrete tools and practical knowledge to counteract sexual abuse and harassment at their schools. It seems that the combination of school leaders and students/pupils as leaders of the project has been a positive factor and the effort has gained very good evaluations. The tour was very successful and 94 percent of the participants gave a 5 or 4 in grade.

Funding

Swedish government.
