Ensuring the right to education in one's mother tongue
Internal practice
Duration
ongoing
Reason it was developed
Among the necessary conditions for the sustainable and effective integration of migrant and refugee students into education in Turkey are the development and implementation of permanent solutions, strategies and educational policies instead of temporary solutions, ensuring cooperation between institutions and organisations, eliminating the language barrier, providing education in migrants‘ and refugees’ own languages and providing foreign language education, as well as eliminating economic problems (financial inadequacy, child labour and child marriage).
Activities
Eğitim Sen has been defending education in mother tongue since its foundation, based on the fact that education in mother tongue is a human right and a pedagogical need. It advocates education in mother tongue not only for migrants and refugees but also for other minority groups. It fights for the solution of the language barrier problem in schools so that migrant and refugee children and children of different nationalities with different mother tongues and different cultures are included in the education system with their linguistic and cultural diversity. It also collaborates with parents' associations, women's and children's organizations to raise awareness about problems such as discrimination, xenophobia, prejudices, racism and assimilation, and supports this struggle through publications, conferences, panels and press releases.
Results
The fact that the government's education policies are based not on cultural diversity but on assimilation, and that it formulates education policies and laws on this basis, are the difficulties encountered in defending the struggle for education in mother tongue. On the other hand, the fact that education in one's mother tongue is a pedagogical need and a human right, and that this awareness has been gradually raised as a result of our panels, publications and conferences is a success.
