Education from high expectations
Internal practice
Duration
the school year 2023-2024
Reason it was developed
The COV's pedagogical committee is a group of board members that focuses on the pedagogical issues of our union, and education in general. This committee works every year on an annual theme. In 2023-2024 was the annual theme: ‘Education from high expectations’. This theme indicates that to achieve quality education for all (i.e. from all aspects of diversity), you have to start from high expectations. It seems obvious, but it is not. Often, unconsciously and from good intentions, teachers set expectations driven by pupils' background characteristics. Low expectations challenge pupils less: a self-fulfilling prophecy as result. The same goes for the expectations teachers have in their own school team. Stereotypes are still alive. To face the current educational challenges, it is essential to harness the strength of the team and the diversity in the team. With the annual theme ‘Education from high expectations’ and the actions organized around it, we wanted to make our members aware of this, inspire and empower them.
Activities
With the annual theme ‘Education from high expectations’ and the actions organized around it, we wanted to make our members aware of this, inspire and empower them. Actions: - Deepening the annual theme in the pedagogical committee - Visit of a good practice (a school of our members) - Round table discussion, fed from experiences in regional workings of our union. - Publication of theme issue sent to all our members - Regional departments organized various actions (workshops, training sessions, etc.) for members.
Results
The theme was widely supported in our union. Actions were organised both at the national and regional levels of our union, informing interested members.
